Venereal Disease and Abnormalities of Babies
Women who have a sexually transmitted disease or urinary tract infection before or during pregnancy had a four times higher potential to produce offspring with a physical disorder called gastroschisis.
In the case of gastroschisis, bowel or organs in the baby grows outside the body. Thus the results of the study researchers from the University of Utah, USA.
Researchers also revealed maternal age factor is also one of the major factors in the case of gastroschisis. Women aged less than 20 years 11 times greater chance of having a baby with gastroschisis than women aged over 25 years.
"If teens have sex and get pregnant, their risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. They did not think about the consequences of their actions so that there is a big problem in this age group," said lead investigator Marcia Feldkamp.
