Mobile phones and the Quality of Sperm

The results of studies conducted in the United States say that men who use mobile phones for four hours or more a day had fewer sperm counts and poorer quality.

The research was conducted in Ohio with 364 men and was presented to the Reproductive Medicine in New Orleans. But a UK expert said it was unlikely that fertility problems are caused by the use in some clinics in Mumbai, India.

The team from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio tested the sperm of 364 men who received treatment at fertility clinics in Mumbai.

From the study found that men who used their phones for more than four hours a day has the lowest average sperm counts, about 50 million per millimeter and the quality is not healthy. Meanwhile men who use cell phones between 2 -4 hours per day has a count of 69 million sperm per millimeter and moderately healthy.

And those who do not use cell phones at all, has the most sperm counts and quality is good.

Dr. Ashok Agarwal, who led the research said that this study does not prove that mobile phones may damage fertility, but said more research was warranted.

Dr Allan Pacey, of the British Fertility Society said there was a significant decrease in health sperm and affect fertility is obvious.

"People perceive using mobile phones as well as brushing your teeth, but the phone can be bad for fertility," he said. Pacey also added, this study remains to be proven and further research is important because mobile phones have become part of everyday community life.
