Basically, this is a high-protein, low-calorie diet that is divided into 4 stages. In this diet, you do not need to measure food or count calories. You can be free to eat as much as you like, whenever you want, as long as you eat is lean protein. 

That's because protein is the main part of the 4th stage of this diet, as well as oat bran, water, and 20 minute walk every day. Vegetables begin to be allowed on stage to 2, followed by a small amount of fruit and whole grains. 

The participants of this diet can lose weight quickly (1-2 pounds per day during phase 1) which according to Dukan, will help to maintain motivation. He promised that hunger will disappear after day 3. However, this book warns that you may experience side effects of diet, such as bad breath, constipation, dry mouth, feeling tired. All of this is the result of the low-carbohydrate diets and high-protein. 

Anything that can be eaten in this diet? 

Phase 1 is called a phase "Attack," it is quite simple: Eat all you want lean protein, accompanied with 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran and 1.5 liters of water per day. That's it. In this diet, you can be free to choose from 72 types of protein sources such as low-fat meats, fish, poultry, eggs, soy, and nonfat milk. 

Then proceed with the phase 2, "Cruise," which allows you to eat 28 types of vegetables that do not contain starch as a companion of the core menu of lean protein and 2 tablespoons of oat bran. Carrots, peas, corn, and tomatoes have not included in the list of vegetables that are allowed at this point. 

Phase 3, "Consolidation," allowing you to eat protein and vegetables as much as possible every day, accompanied by a piece of fruit is low in sugar, 2 slices whole grain bread, and 1 serving of cheese. 
You also should eat 1-2 servings of foods containing starch and 1-2 food "celebration" (you are free to choose the food) per week during this stage undergo. In this stage, you start the core commitment to eating a diet of pure protein every single day of the week (recommended on the day which is always the same) for a lifetime. 

Stage 4, "Stabilization," is the maintenance phase. This diet promises that you can eat anything you like and your weight will not come back up if you follow all the rules correctly, that one day a week follow-protein diet as in phase 1; 3 tablespoons oat bran per day, and walk 20 minutes per day. 
Sugar-free gum, artificial sweetener, vinegar, and spices are allowed in this diet. This diet book also recommends participants to consume a multivitamin and mineral. 

How does this diet program? 

In theory, follows the workings of this diet: Phase 1 aims to trigger weight loss quickly through the menu which are all proteins. You can undergo this stage for 1 to 10 days, and can expect your weight will drop an average of 7 pounds in 5 days. 

During phase 2, which can live up to your ideal target weight is reached, your body will adjust to the weight loss. Dukan encourage you to continue through this stage until the target weight loss is achieved, with an average churn rate of 2 pounds per week.

Stage 3 is a very important step because in between the process of reduction and maintenance, where the menu will be slightly more lenient diet but no weight loss is expected. According to this diet book, a moment like this is a vulnerable time for your body to again increase the weight. But according to this diet book, if you stay through this phase for 5 days for every pound that you have sent down, then you can avoid the increase. 

Phase 4, which is the maintenance phase, designed to be lived a lifetime. This diet is said that the ideal weight that you have obtained you will be able to sustain as long as you still follow all the instructions given. 

What do the experts on this diet? 

Your weight will definitely go down because of this diet cut calories drastically. The lack of carbohydrates also helps to keep hunger. 

But experts concluded that, this diet does not include all the nutrients you need to maintain health. 
"Take a multivitamin once a day would not be enough to replace all the good nutrients derived from fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, which are not included in this diet," says Keri Gans, MS, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association

He reveals the dangers of a strict diet. "When participants began dieting to lose weight quickly, I am afraid they will continue to undergo the stage for longer than recommended, which would increase the risk for nutritional deficiency and kidney damage," said Gans. 

Losing weight is more than 1-2 pounds per week can lead to emergence of gallstones and the reduced number of muscle, he said: "Losing weight quickly is not a healthy way because you are not just going to lose fat and fluids, but also muscle is really difficult to replace, especially when you get older. "

There is no question that a very strict diet will produce weight loss, if you can really live it. But by eliminating the healthy food groups, and unpleasant side effects, making this diet plan seems not a good choice for the long term.

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet, but he could not alone. Diet is really healthy, it should include all food groups, namely vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat milk, and healthy fats, along with lean protein. And your body needs all the nutrients provided by these foods. 

Ignore this diet. Instead, choose a diet that you can control calories live for the long term.
