ALTHOUGH baby teeth (milk teeth) will usually be the date itself and be replaced by permanent teeth, but the teeth still need special attention.
Here are suggestions to keep baby teeth healthy as quoted by the American Academy of Family Physicians:
1. It's never too early to start brushing. Immediately after the first milk teeth appear, start brushing twice daily with a damp cloth.
2. Once your baby is one year old, start brushing with a toothbrush and toothpaste (without fluoride) that are designed specifically for babies.
3. Make sure your baby see a dentist at the first birthday. Consult your baby's teeth to the dentist regularly, twice a year.
4. Avoid too much juice, which may contain lots of sugar, which can lead to tooth decay.
5. When the baby reaches the age of one year, do not give milk using a bottle, give a glass of milk with a baby.
I would suggest using the cloth to wipe down baby's gums even before teeth appear. It is a good habit to get into. My son has been resistive to having his teeth brushed, but I wonder if I had started on his gums if things would be easier. It's at least an easy way for the parents to get into the habit earlier of taking care of teeth. I've also found good tooth info and tips on this Mom's Guide to caring for little teeth, if you want to check it out: http://www.1dental.com/moms-guide/. Thanks for this post. Good refresher as I'm preparing for baby #3 anytime now.
