Diabetes Damage Sperm DNA

MEN who suffer from diabetes can damage sperm DNA contained in them, "which results in male fertility and the health of their offspring," said a researcher at Queen's University, Belfast.

Compared with the quality of DNA in men with diabetes to those without diabetes, was found in a study that the process of DNA solution is better in men with diabetes (52% versus 32% of men without diabetes), and there are a lot of deletion of DNA in cell mitochondria. In addition, the researchers observed that the volume of sperm from men with diabetes was reduced very far from healthy men.

Report the findings in the journal Human Reproduction, a researcher Ishola Agjabe explains that this discovery could be important implications given that diabetes type 1 and 2 with very rapidly growing worldwide.

While diet and obesity are known to be the main factor of developing type 2 diabetes, while type 1 diabetes also develops most of the children of Europe. The reason why type 1 diabetes is growing rapidly, not so obvious cause. Other studies have speculated that genetic or environmental factors may play a role in this regard.

"If the trend continues the development of type 1 diabetes, this will result in increased patient as much as 50 percent over the next ten years. As a consequence, many men who suffer from diabetes in their productive period," said Agjabe.

Fertility is important for health, there are about 1-6 couples who use specialist treatment to deal with fertility problems. "This research is very important, especially to contribute the fact that DNA damaged sperm affect male fertility and reproduction. Other studies have also shown the same thing, while the eggs are in women with disabilities to repair damaged sperm DNA, the process behind the process of solving. This will probably lead to failure of embryo formation and miscarriage, "said Sheena Lewis, one of the researchers.

"Furthermore, this study should be developed so that people can properly understand the damage caused by diabetes, its causes and consequences as well as clinically. Examination of the reproductive health of offspring of diabetic men are also very important," she concluded.
