Inpatient Makes Children Hallucinate

YOU should begin to be careful when your child should spend the night in the intensive care unit (ICU). The reason is, one of third children who must undergo inpatient in the hospital tend to experience delusions, including hallucinations and excessive fear. Researchers in Britain claim that the symptoms will take the children on the state of post-traumatic stress (post traumatic stress disorder).

The researchers found the children tend to hallucinate when they are given strong sedatives such as opiates and benzodiazepines, for more than two days.

"They reported seeing rats, cats, and spiders that climb into their bed. In fact, some of the child insisted that their parents have been confused," said clinical psychologist St George's Hospital, London, Gillian Colville, as quoted Msnbc on the site.

These cases are found in children who entered the hospital with an emergency status also in children who had been given sedatives for more than two days.

"They are very likely to experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress after discharge from hospital for three months," he added. Coville conducted the study based on evaluation of 102 children aged seven years and have left the pediatric ICU of hospital for three months at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London.
