Omega-3 Lowers Risk of Eye Disease
Eating fish and foods rich in fatty acid omega-3 will reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or macular degeneration in the retina of the eye that can lead to blindness in the elderly.
That is the findings of researchers from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
They analyzed nine studies involving 88,974 subjects, including 3203 patients with age-related macular degeneration.
The result, intake of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with decreased high estimated risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration by 38%.
On the other hand, eating fish twice a week could potentially reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration and the initial level.
The researchers said the chain omega-3 fatty acids form a layer of cells in the retina of the eye. Cells of the outer retina are continuously regenerated.
Therefore, lack of omega-3 fatty acids can lead to the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration. However, further studies are still needed to strengthen their findings.
