Psychological Conditions and the HIV Virus
Psychological conditions may affect the health of people infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It was revealed in a study published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine.
Scientists are not yet able to prove the attitudes and mental health directly affect the progression of HIV infection. However, study leader Dr. Gail Ironson of the University of Miami, USA, says the study does indicate there is a strong association between two variables.
In his study, Ironson and colleagues studied a number of studies that investigate the impact of social support, personality, and spirituality on the development of virus in HIV patients.
They concluded that psychological conditions can predict whether a patient can stay healthy longer or even illness will develop faster. Ironson expressing HIV patients who were depressed, two times more susceptible to disease than other patients.
