Cholesterol in Children

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children aged eight years and above are given cholesterol-controlling drugs to prevent them from heart disease as adults.

Dr. Stephen Daniels, member of the AAP's nutrition committee, says the outcome as more and more evidence that trigger heart disease stems from the early period of life.

Cholesterol control drugs are given to children who have too much bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein / LDL) and suffer from obesity and high blood pressure. For children a little excess body weight and the amount of good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein / HDL) is low, the first thing done is to lower their weight, exercise, and nutritional counseling.

The parents are routinely advised to check their child's cholesterol levels. In addition, for children aged one year with excess body weight, given low-fat milk is recommended.
