High Doses of Vitamin B vs. Alzheimer

Based on previous clinical studies ever conducted, stating that the administration of high doses of B vitamins (folate and vitamins B6 and B12) is expected to slow the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. That study came from patients with mild Alzheimer's.

For more than 18 months the patient is experiencing mental decline just like the other 202 patients who regularly consumed high doses of B vitamins. According to Paul S. Aisen MD from the University of California, San Diego, lifestyle by eating high-dose B vitamins did not slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer's patients mentally.

Aisen added that although the study was only based on people who are already suffering from Alzheimer's, but community members are expected not wasted taking high doses of vitamin B to prevent the disease. Aisen was also advised to not consume high doses of vitamin B before actually no clinical trials to confirm that high doses of B vitamins can prevent dementia due to Alzheimer's disease is.

But the dissenting opinion came from Andrew Shao, PhD. He explained that the vitamin does not have such powerful effects of drugs. "Vitamin takes long to see results," he said.

Fortunately, clinical trials of vitamin B will soon be done. It was submitted by Robert J. Clarke, MD, of the University of Oxford, England. Clarke further explained, that the research will be done with caution because the results of the study of vitamin B awaited by many people.

B Vitamins, Homocysteine, and Alzheimer's

Folate (a form of vitamin B9), vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 are to reduce homocysteine levels in the body. People with Alzheimer's tend to have high homocysteine levels. In addition, evidence suggests that homocysteine makes the raw material in the brain is more toxic.

There is no doubt that B vitamins reduce homocysteine. In research Aisen, Alzheimer's patients who took folate (5 milligrams / day), vitamin B6 (25 milligrams / day), and vitamin B12 (1 milligram / day) had 31% lower homocysteine levels compared with patients taking placebo.

But it does not seem to help, at least for patients who do not have vitamin deficiencies.
