Vitamin K and Bone Density

One study found that vitamin K, which is often touted as one of the vitamin that can prevent osteoporosis; it does not completely protect women at the age of post-menopausal decline in bone density. But it can help prevent bone loss and cancer.

"The latest findings on the prevention of bone loss and cancer really not proven," says Angela Cheung, MD, of the University Health Network Toronto and leader of the research.

Research published in the journal PLoS Medicine, involved 440 postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteopenia (bone condition that can be a precursor to osteoporosis). The disease causes bones more fragile and easily broken.

In that study all women had vitamin K to be consumed every day for 2 years, even 261 of them women consume more than 2 years.

"Bone density of the volunteers examined after two years and after 4 years, and the study found no difference in the density of their bones," said Cheung.

Vitamin K and Osteoporosis

Vitamin K with a low dose of the media has been heralded as one way to increase bone density. You also can get it easily in the market. Even in Japan of vitamin K is a government-approved drug to treat osteoporosis.

However, this study states that the use of vitamin K to reduce the risk of bone loss is still a controversy. The selected participants are participants who already suffer from osteopenia and the provision of 5 milligrams of vitamin C every day it did not protect them from security vulnerabilities bones in the elderly.

Roberto Pacifici, MD, director of endocrinology at Emory University in Atlanta, admitted impressed with the results of such research. "Actually, had long found that there is no any connection between vitamin K to the density of human bones," he said.

He said that vitamin D was the one who has an important role for bone strength. If so, should we be taking supplements of vitamin K? Cheung said there was not enough evidence to draw conclusions.

He said people with osteopenia and those who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis should make sure they get enough vitamin D by getting supplements or eat foods such as egg yolks, butter, cheese, fish liver oil, grains, bread, milk, mackerel, oysters, and salmon.
