Peramivir vs. Placebo
A new study is involving 296 participants between the ages of flu patients 20-64 years old. They were given one of two doses of Peramivir or placebo injections into blood vessels.
Participants were asked to answer questionnaires regarding sore throat, headache, cough, fatigue, and other flu symptoms.
Kohno said that the same questionnaire was also used in the study of Tamiflu and Relenza.
The results showed that both doses shorten the time of illness 32-33%. Time to relieve the symptoms of the flu is 59 hours for those who received lower doses, 60 hours of receiving the higher dose, and 82 hours for those receiving placebo.
Kohno said that patients who received injections of Peramivir to recover 20 hours faster than that received placebo.
He added that the Peramivir's success rate is higher than Tamiflu that has been tried before. But the comparison between Peramivir and Tamiflu not has done in a similar study. Peramivir also does not cause serious side effects.
Tamiflu, Relenza and Peramivir is an antiviral medication that prevents neuramidase, an enzyme that plays a role in the spread of flu.
