A study in the United States shows, for pregnant women who drank two or more cups of coffee per day can increase the risk of miscarriage is twice as large than those who drank no coffee.
The researchers said the study has strong evidence that high doses of caffeine during pregnancy - about 200 mg or more per day or equal to two cups of coffee - significantly increase the risk of miscarriage.
Li also added that there are still many uncertainties about this. There has been no firm advice from professionals who do research on what to do about caffeine intake pregnant women. From 15 to 18 studies have found an association between caffeine consumption during pregnancy with risk of miscarriage.
Li's research is conducted involving 1063 pregnant women who are members of the Kaiser Permanente health plan in San Francisco from October 1996 until October 1998. Women in the group never changed their caffeine consumption during pregnancy.
Findings from these findings is the women who consumed two or more cups of coffee or five cans (12 ounces) of soda containing caffeine, has the possibility of doubling the risk of miscarriage than pregnant women who avoided caffeine.
Sources from Reuters said, the risks arise in connection with the element of caffeine, and not other chemicals in coffee, because the researchers also saw an increase in risk when the caffeine is consumed through a soda, tea and hot chocolate.
Li said many researchers think caffeine is harmful because these substances make the metabolism of the immature fetus becomes tense. These substances can also reduce blood flow in the placenta, which can harm the fetus.
Therefore, Li and Dr. Tracy Flanagan, leader of the Women's Health at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, recommends that pregnant women not to consume coffee or caffeine, or at least limit the maximum consumption, one cup a day, if they can not get away from coffee.
