FOR the health of mother and baby, it is advisable to take vitamins during pregnancy. There is a multivitamin specially formulated to correct nutritional deficiencies in the diet of the mother. While the supplements contain several vitamins and minerals, folic acid, iron and calcium are needed most.
Folic acid can reduce the risk of birth defects in the brain and spinal cord, called a "neural tube". Babies with abnormalities of the spinal cord, it is often the case infants, ie, where the baby is born with a spine that is not fused. Her nerves were damaged, leaving the child with varying degrees of paralysis, incontinence, and sometimes mental retardation (mental retardation).
Neural tube defects develop in the first 28 days after conception, before many women realize they are pregnant. Because about half of pregnant women without a planned, the United States Public Health Service recommends that all women planning a pregnancy to consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day. Agency U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that any food made of flour (like bread) to fortified with extra folic acid.
Research shows that taking more than 4,000 mcg of folic acid for at least the first month prior to and during the first trimester may be beneficial. There are several natural sources of folic acid: green leafy vegetables, nuts and citrus fruit. Can be also found in fortified cereals and vitamin supplements.
1. Calcium during pregnancy can prevent bone loss in women who use the fetus as a mineral for bone growth.
2. Iron: Helps the circulation of oxygen in the blood to the baby and mother. While a daily vitamin supplement does not replace a healthy diet, most women need supplements to make sure that they get adequate levels of minerals.
Prenatal vitamins are not the same, some of them contain approximately:
1. 4,000 and 5,000 International Units (IU) of vitamin A
2. 800 and 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folic acid
3. 200 to 300 mg calcium
4. 70 mg vitamin C
5. 1.5 mg thiamine
6. 1.6 mg riboflavin
7. 2.6 mg pyridoxine
8. 17 mg niacinamide
9. 2.2 mcg vitamin B-12
