Elderly at Risk of Silent Stroke
Brain scans routinely in older people (seniors) showed that 10% of them suffered a stroke without symptoms (silent stroke). It increases their risk for suffering a stroke further and experiencing dementia.
"This study demonstrates the importance of early detection and cardiovascular therapy in the elderly," said one member of the research team, Dr. Sudha Seshadri of Boston University School of Medicine.
In this study the brain circuitry scanning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are routinely told about 2,000 people, average age 62 years. From the results of the examination were found about 10.2% of volunteers experiencing a stroke even if they do not have any signs or symptoms would have a stroke.
Found in all, about 84% of volunteers had their brain injury (silent cerebral infarctions / SCIs).
"This proves the truth of the allegations that SCIs initially associated with increased risk of incident stroke and cognitive impairment," said Seshadri.
Besides being a blockage in blood vessels, other factors that increase the risk of silent stroke is high blood pressure or hypertension.
